Fancy Nancy meets Superhero Joe!

Sunday was a biiiiiig day at Once Upon A Time--the all-star sister duo of Jacqueline Preiss Weitzman and Robin Preiss Glasser were here to read and sign many of their books! Before all the fancy glitter and superhero capes descended on the store, we had some heavy moving to do to clear enough space for all the fans. But we got it done, and soon the space was filled with fancy ladies in hats and boas, and even a few superheroes!

Robin and Jackie were so much fun, and talked about their books--and what inspired them. Robin definitely was a Fancy Nancy type when she was a little girl, and she still likes looking fancy!

Jackie shared a secret--that she used to be afraid of lots of things. But, like her character Superhero Joe, she discovered that she could be brave...even when daring to enter scary places like the basement and confronting the monsters in her closet!

The two together have also written a book called "You Can't Take a Balloon Into the Metropolitan Museum," and we had plenty of copies on hand for them to sign, too! The signing line went on...and on...and on...

Afterward, the sisters were nice enough to sign some extra copies for us to have in the store, for people who couldn't make it to the event. Then they posed for a picture with the orchestrators of the event, our very own Maureen and Kris!

All in all, a very fun (and fancy (and heroic)) day!

Old books for new readers

There are so many fabulous children's books around us here, and it's always exciting to introduce a new reader to old favorites. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy type of girl, and I've got books for any age percolating in my mind from years of reading. Just today, I introduced two budding readers to two of my favorite series: The Protector of the Small by Tamora Pierce for a 12 year old girl, and The White Mountains by John Christopher for a 10 year old boy. Both are old favorites in my family, and my parents always love hearing me talk about introducing our favorite books to new readers. They'll be happy when I tell them about today!

For he is a pirate king...

One of the great things about working in a bookstore is being on top of release dates for new and exciting books! One of my favorite (adult) mystery series (and one of our big sellers!) are the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes books by Laurie R. King. What started as an exciting introduction to retired Sherlock and his brilliant young protege Mary in The Beekeeper's Apprentice has continued to what is now the eleventh book, Pirate King. Because I've been working, I haven't had time to start reading yet, but I can't wait! Yo ho...

It's a great day!

Sure, it's hot outside, but inside the store we are enjoying the A/C, putting out the spanking-new fall releases we've been anticipating and engaging customers in discovering just the perfect book to purchase.
